Driver Runs Red Light, Causes Crash at Pittsford Village’s 4 Corners

This was the scene in the heart of our village at 8 PM on Tuesday, June 11th. At around 7:50 PM, a driver heading west on State/Monroe ran a red light and hit a vehicle that was heading north on Main St. The impact caused the second vehicle to spin around and land tipped on its side on the driver’s side.

According to the report, the driver who ran the red light said he thought he had the green light. He was taken to Strong Hospital with complaints of chest pain. The driver of the vehicle that was hit and landed on its side did not seek medical treatment. There were two witnesses — one in a vehicle waiting on S. Main to turn left onto Monroe and a pedestrian who was standing at the corner of S. Main and State.

The driver was issued a citation for running the red light. We do not know if he was released from the hospital. Both vehicles were towed. The sunlight westbound was noted in the report, but was not given as a reason for the crash.

It was a beautiful night, so there was a lot of bike and pedestrians traffic. There were lots of people who stepped in to help before the emergency responders arrived, as well. I was touched by all the people who immediately jumped in to help the woman and her dog get out of the flipped car and sat with her.

This damn intersection is constantly plagued by aggressive, speeding drivers that frequently run red lights. This is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in the Rochester area, yet the 20K+ drivers that speed through this intersection daily still rule the road.
