The Village of Pittsford has been advocating for a pedestrian island on N. Main Street for years and years. It was recommended in the Active Transportation Plan and it finally happened as part of New York State Department of Transportation’s (NYSDOT) huge road rehabilitation project in the Village that wrapped up before the winter.
This traffic calming pedestrian infrastructure gives people a safe place to cross (and wait when needed) between the Del Monte and Pittsford Dairy. There are lots of businesses and activity here between Washington and Schoen Place, yet — prior to this addition — there were no mid-block crossing options between those two intersections. And that’s a looooong block. Consequently, it was a frequent jay walking spot. This thing is a long-time coming and was a Herculean effort between NYSDOT and the Village. Thanks to years of studying and prior planning from the Village, NYSDOT was able to take action on those plans once the funds were available.
