Not to be outdone by the State Street Bridge, the N. Main Street Bridge in the Village will be getting a facelift too!
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) will be removing and replacing the deck in Summer 2022. NYSDOT expects the bridge to be closed for up to 12 weeks, hoping to re-open before Labor Day 2022.
Good News: The Erie Canalway Trail will remain open during the entire project (whoo hoo!), as will the canal.
Some enhancements headed our way with the project:
— Sidewalks: 5’-0”
— Shoulders: 5’-0”
— Travel lanes: reduced from 11’ to 10’
If you use this bridge regularly, you know that the sidewalks are way to narrow on the bridge. It fits two people who know each other well. If you are pushing a stroller, someone must walk in the street to pass you. While the current NYSDOT plan of 5′ sidewalks is an improvement, the heavy pedestrian/bike and vehicle traffic on this bridge creates a need for wider sidewalks at a minimum like those on the State Street Bridge (we would have liked even wider sidewalks there, but at least now they are smooth and your kids won’t pop a tire on them). The Pittsford Active Transportation Plan, Village of Pittsford Comprehensive Plan (and previous Comp Plans), Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan and various pedestrian safety and community plans all underscore the inadequate sidewalks and need for improvements. We will be providing this input to NYSDOT and encourage you to provide your input on this and other aspects of the project.
The pedestrian improvements along N. Main Street announced by NYSDOT last year will be occurring as planned along with the bridge work and road resurfacing projects.
NYSDOT has scheduled a virtual public information session for Thursday, October 14 from 5-6 PM. Click here to join the WebEx meeting and see more details.
