A cyclist was hit at the crossing at N. Main Street and Schoen Place Saturday morning just before 10. That was the same day as the Pittsford Regatta and Paddle and Pour Festival. It was cloudy and the roads were dry (it was before the storm rolled in).
There are lots of people out walking, running and biking through that area of the Village on normal weekend mornings. On regatta days and event days, there are lots more. Drivers often drive more cautiously on these days, because of all the hustle, bustle and activity on the canal.
According to the Police Accident Report, the cyclist began to cross N. Main Street after he observed northbound traffic stop to let him cross. The driver of a southbound (heading toward the 4 corners) SUV hit him in the crosswalk. The driver “looked down for a brief second as she approached the intersection” and didn’t see the cyclist crossing, because her view was partially blocked by stopped vehicles.
Those of you that traverse this intersection regularly know that the difficult line of sight is northbound (which is the direction the traffic that stopped to let the cyclist cross was headed). The southbound direction is downhill and has a better view of the crossing. The crosswalk is clearly marked and has a “state law, yield to pedestrians” sign in the middle of the crossing. [See southbound view in photo below.]
The driver was issued two citations: 1.) Failure to yield right of way to a pedestrian and 2.) Unlicensed operation of a vehicle.
We are trying to find out more information on the current condition of the cyclist.
